When second son Alexander Valentine loses his brother to an assassin’s arrow, he discovers that his family protects an ancient secret and reluctantly finds himself at the center of the final battle of a war that was supposed to have ended two thousand years ago.
Pursued by the dark minions of an ancient enemy, Alexander flees to the mountain city of Glen Morillian where he discovers that he is the heir to the throne of Ruatha, one of the Seven Isles, but before he can claim the throne he must recover the ancient Thinblade. Seven were forged by the first Sovereign of the Seven Isles and bound to the bloodline of each of the seven Island Kings in exchange for their loyalty to the Old Law. Each sword is as long as a man’s arm, as wide as a man’s thumb and so thin it can’t be seen when viewed from the edge. Thinblade is the epic fantasy adventure story of Alexander’s quest to find the ancient sword, claim the throne of Ruatha and raise an army to stand against the enemy that has awoken to claim dominion over all of the Seven Isles.

"He was in a fight and he had a blade in his hand. Nothing else mattered."This is an excellent beginning to the Sovereign of the Seven Isles series. I was hooked from the very beginning and knew I'd be reading book two long before I'd finished book one. It features Alexander Valentine, second son of a minor noble, who spends his days happily working on his father's ranch. Then his older brother is killed by an assassin's poisoned arrow and dark forces begin to move against Alexander and those he loves. When he is marked by a brand of a Reishi glyph on his neck, he learns of a curse on his bloodline that designates him as the one who will lead the battle against a two thousand year old arch mage, Reishi Prince Phane, a necromancer.
This saga is the beginning of Alexander's quest to unite Ruatha behind him and to find the legendary Thinblade, an ancient sword, lost for millennia and critical to defeating Phane. It's a great story all in itself. I highly recommend it.

Thinblade Sovereign of the Seven Isles Book 1 edition by David A Wells Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This is the first in an exceptionally well written series. If you are a fan of this genre - you can't miss these books. The creativity here is awesome. There is no lack of action or suspense. Just when you think a situation is impossible, the writer pulls it together. For a debut series one could not ask for more. The only, perhaps, downside is that I think there could be a bit less detail in the battle scenes. Even in this genre there can be just so much 'blood and guts' for the reader to deal with. I look forward to reading his next offering.
This is the first book of a seven-book (so far) series and you can tell that this is a magnum opus that is building up a world vision that is as big and complicated as the Lord of Rings. In 318 pages, the author has built the world of Seven Isles with care and deliberation. The hero, the younger brother of the heir to the family, found himself saddled with the responsibility of saving the world when an assassin killed his brother. Carried by dark forces beyond his understanding, he had to grow up very quickly to counter these forces with caches of magical knowledge and weapons left behind for him by a long-dead mage, culminating in a sword called Thinblade. He fights of hordes of mercenary soldiers, wizards, battle mages, and has to pass many tests of his integrity and ability. The fight scenes were well-choreographed and realistic. The explanations of magic, i.e. connection to the firmament, are interesting and well-thought out. The characters were well developed, including the villains.
I didn't give five stars because the story was too predictable. First, the bad and the good guys are too black and white. Our hero is too perfect. He doesn't succumb to temptation or weakness. He maintains his humility and feels guilt for killing his enemies. The villains are unremittingly evil, with one exception, i.e. the general of the bad army turns out to be like a competent and powerful mage who is troubled by his evil leader. The book needed more gray characters, which most people are. There needs to be more betrayals, more evil guys that turn out to be not so bad, and more good guys that are weak and selfish. Second, the magic was a bit too much and too convenient. After all, if one can do anything and everything with magic, the suspense is gone. You know that our hero is going to win when he can just sit down and read a book to become the best swordfighter in the realm. The author doesn't allow the hero to reach depths of despair that real heroes often face. Third, the relationships between the people are too perfect. Our hero's friends are all impeccably loyal, willing to give their lives and seemingly incapable of feeling peckish at times. In fact, the relationship between our hero and his lady love is so smarmy that one wonders if one is reading fairy tale or a fantasy novel.
There did not seem to be as many mistakes in the novel as some critics claim. Could the book have been edited since the last commentary? Normally, I am quite sensitive to spelling and grammatical errors and was not bothered by the few errors present. Likewise, the author appropriately used of a fairly diverse vocabulary. I had no second thoughts about purchasing the rest of the series and hope that the author will give the characters more depth and complexity in the coming books.
Lucky? Ranch? For a while, I thought David A. Wells was writing a story about the old West rather than a fantasy novel. Also, being a fantasy novel, whenever "earthly" names are used, or terms that have a definite earthly connotation (I wish I could remember one that was used in the story, but I can't), they pull my imagination out of the fantasy world and back into reality. If an author is writing a completely fantastical fictional story, then please keep it tied in to fantasy.
OveralI, I thought Thinblade was a well-written and thought out story. There was character development and descriptive details. However, for me at least, with all the thoughtful planning the author used, and even though the many emotions of the characters were described, the narrative seemed emotionally dry. It didn't pull at MY emotions. Perhaps that's because it just isn't the kind of story that reaches deep enough to give one's heart a good twist in spite of the emotional circumstances the main character endured. Otherwise Thinblade was a decent story. Oh! And develops a second map showing all of the seven isles so the reader can have an idea of their relationship to one another. (Or maybe I'm jumping the gun and the author has already done the.)
